My British Grandparents

I remember as a child, going to my grandparents’ house on Chicago’s South Shore. As soon as the car would pull into the driveway, my sister and I would hop out and run up the stairs yelling “Cuppa tea, Grandma!"

Grandma would make tea. Milk and sugar were put out. We’d sit in the sunny dining room and the adults would talk and smoke Pall Malls. My grandfather would act silly and I’d beam with delight. I always took at least three sugars.
